As business and personal lives blur for many workers, the bring your own device trend has picked up steam, research shows. Does this mean employees could play a larger role in driving application adoption than in the past?
Jeanne Ross, director and principal research scientist at the Center for Information Systems Research (CISR) at the MIT Sloan School of Management, said two things are going on with users:
- Increased comfort with technology used at home.
- Interest in accessing employer-owned data on personal devices.
While many workers would like their employer to grant access to data on a device they feel most productive with, it's not that simple, said Ross. "In reality, to protect that data, to ensure some consistency in processes across employees, we actually can't just say, 'Well, whatever you use at home will work here.'"
In some situations, businesses have been able to accommodate requests for obtaining work-related information on a range of tools. Access to work email, for example, has become widely available for workers regardless of device.
The evolution isn't just due to employers trying to keep up with staff demand, but is a result of security technology being more sophisticated. That being said, Ross doesn't see the strained relationship disappearing. "We are simply going to have that tension forever," she said.
