EGL (Enterprise Generation Language), created by IBM, is a high level programming language designed to simplify the development of business software by shielding a developer from the complexity of middleware. A free EGL tool for Web 2.0 will soon be available from IBM. SearchSOA.com recently spoke with Ben Margolis, who helped create EGL, and he shared three things to consider when choosing whether to use EGL.
- Ease of use. EGL shields developers from the complexity of technology domains such as the varied platforms, data-storage types, and user-interface mechanisms that are now in use. According to Margolis, the language facilitates ease of thought and ease of communication. This way, the developer's focus is on the business problem being addressed rather than on technology.
- Modernization capability. EGL is a helpful tool for enterprise modernization. For example, you can expose the logic in an IBM i called program or service progr...

am with a few clicks. A Rational tool implementation of EGL creates a Web-service layer for the existing program so that a service requester on another platform can access the old logic. Simple procedures are also in place for accessing code on the mainframe, by way of CICS. The implication is that logic running on IBM i or the mainframe can be exposed to any user with access to a Web connection and the right security credentials.
- Necessity. If your company is in support mode--that is, using unchanging systems solely for internal use--most technical upgrades, including the implementation of EGL, can be avoided. However, Margolis warns, few companies can afford that kind of stasis, and he suggests that a company in support mode could consider a pilot project to see whether EGL might be of interest in the future.
