Three tips for success in SOA

Getting started in SOA can be a challenge. We asked the Rolta SOA Center of Excellence, a software division of multinational consultancy Rolta and a provider of SOA implementation support, what tips they might have for those looking for success in SOA. They follow:

1. Use an iterative, agile approach to SOA project management. For each SOA project within each SOA domain, plan on two- to four-week sprints, at the end of which your SOA project team delivers a "working product" – something new that can actually be used to generate and/or improve business results. Coordinate those projects through standard agile product owner organizational model mechanisms in concert with a SOA domain federation governing board.

2. Drive consistency, automation, and acceleration through the use of light-weight, loosely coupled tools. These tools should enable the ability to complete work within the sprint timeframe and enable version management within the governance paradigm of the organization.

3. Focus on facilitating communication for governance, orchestration and buy-in. This communication addresses the biggest opportunity to realize value from SOA by empowering positive cultural change needed for SOA adoption and full exploitation.
