DEFINITION - Appliance computing is an Internet-based computing architecture where software applications reside on a Web server rather than on the end-user's workstation. The workstation, or appliance, is a thin client; it does not have a CD-ROM or floppy drive. The appliance typically has only an operating system and a connectivity program, such as a Web browser, which allows the appliance to connect to the server in order to access applications the end-user needs. The purpose of appliance computing is to make remote management easier and more cost effective.
