DEFINITION - The Java chip is a microchip that, when included in or added to a computer, will accelerate the performance of Java programs (including the applets that are sometimes included with Web pages). The special chip can execute all or some of the instructions in the Java bytecode directly without requiring interpretation by a software virtual machine.

The Java chip may be particularly important as part of embedded systems in handheld devices such as smart phones.
