- XMLHttpRequest, also called XHR, is an application program interface (API) that was first used by Microsoft in version 5.0 of its Internet Explorer Web browser to function as an ActiveX object. Since then, XHR has been implemented in all versions of Mozilla, versions 7.0 and above of Netscape and versions 1.2 and above of the Apple browser known as Safari.XHR is an important component of Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML). Several major search engines and graphics-oriented databases make use of XHR. Two of the most well known are MapQuest and Virtual Earth, both of which facilitate travel planning and physical site location.
