The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and 11 technology vendors demonstrated the interoperability of the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) on Wednesday at the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

The SAML Interoperability Lab, which is part of the GSA's E-Authentication Initiative, tested both types of SAML version 1.1 Single Sign-On, as well as additional scenarios, to gauge SAML's flexibility.

Currently, E-Authentication is working with products that are interoperable using the SAML 1.0 protocol.

"Interoperability among products is a key to the federated approach adopted by the E-Authentication Initiative," said Steve Timchak, the program's manager. "Additional protocols will emerge and become viable standards in the E-Authentication environment as federated authentication evolves. Sponsoring the SAML 1.1 Interoperability Lab is part of E-Authentication's commitment to this evolution."
