Reactivity Inc., Belmont, Calif., has created a guide that it said will help companies deploying Web services to gauge their future XML traffic throughput needs and establish performance benchmarks for XML security products.

The "performance framework" identifies the components comprising XML Web services security -- from SSL termination, authentication and authorization to XML parsing, virus checking and denial-of-service prevention, Reactivity said. It also points out six key characteristics of predicted XML Web services traffic with the greatest impact on an XML Web services security solution's overall performance, according to Reactivity.

Reactivity also said that the framework identifies how an enterprise can use XML firewalls, cryptographic acceleration products and management software to boost XML throughput performance.
