Version 1.4 of the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) specification was approved this week by the Java Community Process, according to Sun Microsystems Inc., which created Java and controls its development and licensing.

A free download of the new specification is expected to be available on Monday.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Sun also said that licenses for version 1.4 of J2EE, a key platform for developing Web services applications, have also been granted to two open-source application server software makers -- Apache Software Foundation and JBoss Group. JBoss has long disputed its need to buy a license for J2EE, but it recently completed negotiations with Sun to resolve the issue.

Sun said that through the Java Community Process (JCP) it is offering special license terms, as well as free technology compatibility kits, for non-profit groups and open source projects.

According to Sun, J2EE version 1.4 is the first Web services-focused technology that supports the Web Services Interoperability Organization's Basic Profile guidelines. Sun said that the J2EE 1.4 specification also includes improved deployment and management capabilities to help developers accelerate time to market for their Web services applications.

The J2EE 1.4 specification is expected to available Monday as a free download on Sun's Developer Network site. The J2EE 1.4 software developer kit includes documentation and tools for developers to learn J2EE and get started with the J2EE 1.4 specification.
