UDDI.org Abstract: "UDDI stands for Universal Description, Discovery and Integration. The UDDI specification enables businesses to quickly, easily, and dynamically find and transact with one another. UDDI enables a business to (i) describe its business and its services, (ii) discover other businesses that offer desired services, and (iii) integrate with these other businesses."

Industry Quotes about UDDI
[ Return to Table of Contents ]

  • Chris Kurt, program manager for UDDI.org and Microsoft program manager for Web services: "The one thing we saw when we started this," said UDDI.org's Kurt, "is that everyone in the industry is moving to providing electronic services, away from the browser and down to the XML layer. Even across deep political boundaries, there's no possible way for this to work unless we create something that can be counted on as a piece of technology infrastructure regardless of platform. If you believe in a Web services model, this is too important to compete over."
  • Ronald Schmelzer, analyst for market research firm ZapThink: "For a while, UDDI has been the red-headed stepchild of web services. People would talk about it, but they really weren't quite clear on how it fit in."
  • David Smith, vice president and Gartner fellow in Gartner Research: "Web services, such as UDDI, enable businesses to reduce the cost of integration. Companies can benefit from implementing service-oriented architectures to provide a platform for innovation and lessen their need to focus on mundane IT tasks. Companies should begin to evaluate the role UDDI may play in their businesses and should consider becoming active in relevant standards activities, which can help further business goals."
  • Ted Schadler, Forrester's group director of research: "We expect internal use of UDDI for services-oriented architecture to be big, important, and a very cool enabler of Web services. I expect all the private hubs to adopt UDDI in 2003."
