Quick Takes: Vordel commits to WS-Security

Dublin, Ireland-based Web services security company Vordel has announced that its flagship product VordelSecure, which secures XML-based communications, will comply with new standards being developed by OASIS and W3C. The company's products, which already comply with Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) version 1.0 and the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I)'s WS-Security specification, will continually be adapted to support new standards as they are ratified in community standards bodies.

SAML is an XML-based security standard for exchanging authentication and authorization information. Because it is an open standard, it allows security products such as VordelSecure to communicate with other security infrastructure, regardless of type or implementation. The WS-Security specification, initiated by Microsoft, IBM and VeriSign, and then submitted to OASIS, is a Web Services standard to support, integrate and unify multiple security models, mechanisms and technologies.

Prentice Hall publishes Web services book for developers

Publishing house Prentice Hall PTR, located in Upper Saddle River, N.J., has announced the publication of "Web Services A Technical Introduction" by Harvey and Paul Deitel.

The book offers an overview of Web services for professional programmers, including explanations of what they are, how they differ from previous computing paradigms and what benefits they offer. The Deitels have a unique approach to teaching programming, and this book presents programming concepts in the context of complete, working programs followed by screen shots of the input/output dialogs that occur when a program executes.

The Deitels are also authors of the best-selling "How to Program" series. "Web Services A Technical Introduction," is available from Prentice Hall PTR for $39.99.

AmberPoint demonstrates Web services interoperability

Oakland, Calif.-based AmberPoint Inc., a Web services management firm, has announced a successful demonstration of cross-platform Web services interoperability. Through a live, cross-vendor demo at the recent XML Web Services One conference in Boston, AmberPoint showed how its Management Foundation product can manage Web services built by several vendors across diverse environments.

In cooperation with IBM, Microsoft, Iona, Excelon and The Mind Electric, AmberPoint demonstrated Web services integration in action based on a realistic business scenario. During the demonstration, customers, suppliers, warehouses and banks transacted business across a variety of technology platforms. The scenario illustrated how organizations can achieve benefits from Web services standards already in place. Additionally, AmberPoint was able to monitor the overall health of the demonstration, showing system availability, throughput, and performance.

Each of the participating vendors developed their end-points independently and without regard to the AmberPoint management system. AmberPoint was immediately able to extract detailed information from the running system without requiring coding or system changes to the vendors' Web services.

IBM partners with Siebel on business processes

IBM Corp. and Siebel Systems Inc. of San Mateo, Calif. have announced an extension of their alliance to develop, market, and sell business process integration products.

Under the terms of the new agreement, Siebel will license IBM business process templates and common object models to accelerate the delivery of its pre-built business process library. Additionally, the companies will roll out global joint solutions showcase centers where customers can participate in demonstrations of WebSphere Business Integration server.

As a result of this alliance, according to both companies customers will have greater flexibility in their IT investment decisions to choose applications supported by standards-based integration technology. This adds to the two companies' long-standing alliance in which Siebel Systems has integrated Siebel's e-business applications with IBM hardware, software, and services to generate cross-industry business solutions.

SeeBeyond sets date for customer conference

Application integration company SeeBeyond, headquartered in Monrovia, Calif., has announced that its SeeBeyond Horizons customer conference will take place October 6-9 at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. The event will focus on supply chain integration, customer relationship management integration, healthcare, financial services and government. Attendees will be comprised of 500 business executives and technology professionals.

SeeBeyond will present EAI experts and practitioners from its customer companies. Speakers will include Jim Demetriades, CEO and founder of SeeBeyond and Anthony E. Scott, CTO for GM's Information Systems and Services organization. The keynotes will cover technology issues that drive business in today's challenging economic environment. Additional speakers will be announced at a later date.
