UDDI for the enterprise: Version 3 is a big step forward
One of the key standards for Web services, UDDI has played second fiddle to SOAP and WSDL as a technology that is critical to the early development of Web services. Why? First, for both security and usability reasons, enterprise users cast a wary eye on the vision of a giant Yellow Pages of Web service components available to all developers. Second, the relatively low-level and limited scope of Web service projects leaves UDDI as a future requirement when firms see a significant proliferation in the number of available services.
THE HURWITZ TAKE: Two important announcements will help UDDI overcome the hurdles it is facing:
- UDDI version 3 is released. The latest iteration of the UDDI standard provides a range of new features designed to accelerate the use of Web service repositories by enterprise users. The most notable features are support for XML-based digital signatures and the ability to promote Web services developed behind the firewall from a local registry to a private or public registry.
- UDDI will transition to OASIS for ongoing development. As part of the version 3 announcement, UDDI.org announced that the OASIS industry standards body will serve as the steward for the UDDI project and will continue development of the UDDI technical work.
- The move to OASIS means that critical emerging Web Service standards -- including UDDI, WS-Security, ebXML, and a host of other XML schema -- fall under a single umbrella organization. The challenge for OASIS is to collaborate with the W3C and IETF to ensure that Web services standards don't fragment under the pressure of competing vendor interests.
