ABSTRACT: As the focus of his Discussion Day, Howard will discuss how to approach .NET within your organization, including what to worry about and what not to worry about.
One of the largest impacts of .NET will be Microsoft support for Web services - the latest way to get what people have wanted to get from software for the last 30 - 40 years. If Web services are widely adopted and commercially available and 3rd party hosted Web services prove to be robust and reliable then the impact will be:
Much greater interdependence of software systems
- Widespread adoption of pay as you go / transactional payment models for software
- Enforcing services as a black-box with a well defined interface should lead to the quality of software
- Improved interoperability of services independent of implementation language
- New models for software tools selection and purchase
- TCO of a system should be directly tied to its usage
- Whether or not 3rd party services are widely adopted, an architecture based on internally hosted Web services will become the norm for enterprise applications over the next 2 - 3 years
How to prepare for .NET:
- Begin training and prototyping Web services using the key technologies: XML, SOAP, UDDI
- Identify upcoming projects that are good candidates for experimentation with Web services
- Important enough to get the attention and resources they need to succeed, not so crucial that delay or failure will sink your business
- Develop an approach for integrating applications based on Web services into your existing architecture
- Identify compatibility issues between the .NET version of development tools and previous versions and if necessary maintain separate environments
- Find a trusted advisor who is already working with the technology to share their experiences with you. This could be a Microsoft consultant, a business partner, or other 3rd party already working with the technology.
What to worry about:
- The robustness, reliability, and availability of 3rd party hosted services
- Performance of widely distributed applications
- Is this really just a complicated way to raise the cost of software so that vendors can increase revenue without raising prices?
What not to worry about:
- Don't wait for .NET tools to reach "Service Pack 1" to begin working with them
- Is it too early to begin investigating/investing in this technology
- Will Microsoft abandon this direction as they have others? I believe them when they say this is a "bet the company" strategy - they have to make this work
