Legacy modernization software provider Alchemy Solutions, Inc. recently announced GA for NeoServices, a Windows-based offering that service-enables mainframes. The goal of the product is to provide a less-programmatic way to bring Web services to mainframe tools such as CICS and IMS.

"We offer a way to do Web services without having to do programming," said Ron Langer, General Manager, Alchemy. Users can create a composite of multiple mainframe application pieces and non-mainframe pieces, he said.

Alchemy Solutions resulted from the 2008 spin off of the Legacy Modernization Group of Fujitsu Computer Systems. The core products of the company, which focuses on modernization of CICS and batch applications within the Microsoft .NET environment, include NeoKicks, NeoBatch, NeoSort and NeoData packages.

Now, as an independent software vendor, Alchemy can grow faster, said Langer. His focus is on large enterprises with big Big Blue footprints.

Like others these mainframe shops now face dramatic pressures on maintenance budgets.

These firms can "lower their budgets but get same functionality" by moving IBM mainframe applications to the Windows .NET platform, asserts Langer.

Langer is quick to point out that the mainframe has a place in the modern system mix. But, he notes, "Not every application that runs on a mainframe warrants the costs associated with it."
