Microsoft is in the midst of rolling out its next set of development tools. That means percolating elements of .NET 4.0, most of which have appeared in the form of Community Technology Previews, are being prepped to become full-fledged products.

The .NET 4.0 elements are supported as part of Visual Studio 2010, which Microsoft has begun to make available for download. Both .NET 4.0 and VS 2010 will be on display at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference (PDC) next month in Los Angeles. The company has pledged an official launch on March 22, 2010.

Among the elements in the new package will be improved JQuery and MVC support within the ASP.NET Ajax tool set, REST support courtesy of an updated Entity Framework package, and UML modeling tools that represent Microsoft's first major foray into UML since it supported a Rational Rose VS add-in in the 1990s.

Dynamic language support is enhanced in this version of .NET. IronRuby, IronPython and F# are among languages supported in the CLR.

Microsoft has simplified the product lineup for Visual Studio 2010. There are three basic versions expected: VS 2010 Ultimate, VS 2010 Premium and VS Professional. All are offered along with MSDN services. Visual Team Foundation Server is offered with all VS versions. But the server version of Visual Studio known as Visual Studio Team system is going away.
