Enterprise modeling and IT planning in one application |

At Gartner's Enterprise Architecture Summit this week, EA and mobile software vendor Sybase announced a partnership to move its PowerDesigner product from enterprise modeling to also handling IT planning.
The company has partnered with EA and IT planning vendor Troux to harness its experience in enterprise IT planning and modernization.
"PowerDesigner's history for years has been in helping folks implement and maintain their database systems," said David Dichmann, Senior Product Manager of design tools at Sybase. "But we learned early on that those systems are only as good as the enterprise architecture."
In many areas of information technology today, business users are getting more involved in IT operations. Applications are being simplified as more and more code sits below a GUI. This partnership intends to bridge the gap between those implementing EA and those planning it out.
"It's really a notion of bringing together stakeholders," said Emeka Obianwu, VP of corporate development at Troux. "Our primary stakeholder is the CIO."
Previously, PowerDesigner allowed users to define and describe different pieces of an enterprise. In addition, it contained a metadata repository for cross-model impact analysis. But once the enterprise modeling was finished, users would look elsewhere to translate the models into material technological requirements.
The new PowerDesigner will allow an enterprise to invite all parties involved in modeling and planning to collaborate under one common application.
PowerDesigner came to Sybase a number of years ago when Sybase acquired PowerBuilder. It has continually evolved from its original database designer roots. PowerDesigner runs under Windows as a native application or under Eclipse through a plug-in.
