Comment - What is Complex Event Processing (CEP)? Maybe it is best considered as data correlation on steroids. On one level, it is an amalgam of business processes. But the size of the data streams to be inspected, and the speed at which it must find patterns, makes CEP an altogether unique bird.

Think of the pattern identifiers behind Jack Bauer's dare-devil feats on the TV show 24. That is CEP. In the only slightly more mundane world of banking, CEP is behind the advanced systems that track and attack fraud related to, for example, credit cards.

As the data side of CEP is so crucial, it is not surprising to see IBM's DB2 teams and Oracle's 11g crews pursuing CEP-style software advances. Add Informatica to the mix.

Last week, data mainstay Informatica forged deeper into Event-Driven Middleware with the purchase of Agent Logic. The acquired company makes tools that help developers to create rules for event stream handling data sources that can include message queues, databases, telemetry feeds and control systems. A tool for business users lets companies set rules for events – and threats - and associated actions.
