Kapow technologies released a version of its flagship server, placing formerly separate editions of the product within one package.

Moreover, with this new version, the "Kapow Mashup Server" becomes the "Kapow Web Data Server." This can be viewed as a nod to the increasing importance data integration has taken in an "enterprise mashup space" that has, in Kapow's view, evolved to include SOA, BI/Web Intelligence, content migration and portal generation capabilities.

The Kapow software works as a Web data extraction tool. It can access Web sites and retrieve needed data. To achieve speed, its Web robots can work in a multi-threaded multi server environment. The software is said to separate presentation from content, and do sophisticated transforms on the data.

New features in the latest version include a browser-based scheduler and better support for JavaScript and Ajax intensive Web sites.

After an initial company history focused on Web site building, Kapow soon set out to address Web data access problems, said the company's founder.

"We can hook up to the interface and access the data. We leverage the fact that everyone now is working with data in a Web browser," said Stefan Andreasen, CTO and Founder, Kapow.

The extracted data, he said, "can be wrapped into services or turned into portlets."

"Also," said Andreasen, "we can migrate data out of Web apps and make a new data base model. We can do the extraction, transform and loading." Users can leave the data where it is, and update data status using Kapow's precise scheduled Web robots. Or they can migrate the data. "The common thing is that we extract through the Web interface. We mimic a person filling out data [forms]," said Andreasen.

Tools such as Kapow's may find further use as companies build applications that span multiple enterprises, where some important data actually resides on the Web - outside a company's formal control.
