The Rolta SOA Center of Excellence has rolled out the iPerspective tools sets for governance and management of services. The software is delivered as part of Rolta's SOA solutions.

The new tools are said to help provide a short-term incremental, or agile, style of development for SOA, which has sometimes been associated with long-term projects that show slow return on IT investment.

With agile development methods, teams seek to break projects up into manageable portions that can be rapidly created and checked for validity. The iPerspective software focuses on creating services based on JDBC driver connections that serve as focal points for many service oriented applications, although other forms of APIs can be handled as well.

The Rolta SOA Center of Excellence, formed as a software division of multinational consultancy Rolta after the purchase of Oracle consultancy TUSC early in 2008. As part of the Rolta SOA Center of Excellence, the company said it has expanded services support to also include services running on non-Oracle platforms.

"We are focusing on building the Web services off of the JDBC drivers," said Chris Ostrowski, Technical Management Consultant for TUSC. He said the iPerspective tool allows users to get going quickly – to point-and-click on data sources, and in effect turn disparate data sources into services.

"With SOA, some people don't know how to get started," he said.

For that matter it seems some people don't know when to stop. That is where 'agile incrementalism' might help.

The Rolta approach to incrementalism is based on agile methods. "Our mantra is to think big but start small," said Ostrowski. "You can start small, use agile methods. You can have a strong foundation, but start, for example, at a departmental level."

Early, tangible results are key, he said. It is important as well to make sure customers are implementing things that can be used immediately.
