Tibco creates high-speed messaging appliance |

Tibco Software has created its first hardware product, the Tibco Messaging Appliance P-7500, aimed at reducing latency in critical applications. It can also reduce the number of servers required in critical messaging backbones.
The appliance can achieve a 50-percent reduction in latency, increase predictability of messaging, and handle ten-times the volume of present software-only messaging solutions according to Rourke McNamara, Director of Products, Tibco. It further adds built-in hardware fault tolerance for active failover between appliances.
McNamara said the P-7500 will initially support Tibco Rendevous pub-sub messaging software line. Other hardware products are planned. "There is huge explosion in the number of messages in many environments today," he said. The new appliance is intended to deal with this. Tibco estimates some organizations' apps now exceed 5 million events per second, and this level is expected to rise to 10 million-plus before long.
At the heart of the P-7500 are field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) tuned to perform the message routing tasks.
This is not the first time application-specific hardware has been applied to middleware problems. For example, DataPower (now part of IBM) and others created appliances for accelerating XML content processing. McNamara suggested these approaches were still reliant on general purpose processors, and were less favorable than the application-specific hardware approach Tibco was unveiling.
