Software provider InterSystems has enhanced its Ensemble rapid development and deployment environment with several services-related capabilities. Better security and faster operation are parts of the agenda.

Recent enhancements include: WS-Security 1.1 support, extended monitoring for composite applications and support for binary-encoded XML formats within SOAP messages.

Complex integrations like those found in InterSystems' core health services market are increasingly moving to XML, but are also creating issues as they encounter high message volumes.

"When you get into such systems, where there are millions of messages that happen in a day, speed is really critical," said John Joseph, InterSystems Director of Ensemble Product Management. "The interfaces have to be as fast as possible."

Such issues led InterSystems to add Ensemble support for messaging in binary or binary-encoded XML formats within SOAP messages. This is said to reduce size of the SOAP message, leading to Web services performance improvements.

"Ensemble can work very nicely in the SOA world. We can expose and consume services and, through our orchestration, can do calls to Web services and on Web services types of apps," said InterSystems' Joseph. The results, which he describes as composite-style apps, can be managed more effectively in the latest version of Ensemble, he said.

Also new for Ensemble is HL7 messaging sequence management. This health-industry messaging format, which has embraced XML in recent updates, can be a bear to manage. InterSystems' new HL7 Sequence Manager can accept incoming HL7 messages from multiple sources and ensure that they are handled in the sequence order specified by the sender.
