Tibco takes BPM and BI into 3-D |

High-powered 3-D visualization may take on a greater role in new-style business intelligence apps, if products like Tibco Spotfire 2.2 are an indication. The new software allows line-of-business professionals to creatively explore relationships between different types of data, in order to reveal hidden risks, fraud, and threats, as well as business opportunities, according to Tibco.
Tibco Spotfire version 2.2 is an in-memory enterprise analytics platform offering 3-D visualization. Tibco sees the analytics platform as a driver for development of BPM, said Brad Hopper, director for Spotfire.
The Spotfire software originally arose out of scientific software projects. Spotfire has offered the analytics platform for commercial purposes for a number of years. Tibco acquired Somerville, Mass.-based Spotfire 18 months ago and now operates it as a separate division.
It is suggested that better roll-ups of BPM application activity in turn give better views into the value of BPM software, and open the way to more development funding.
"You use BPM to orchestrate an existing process but unless you can articulate the improvement you are going to get, it's often difficult to justify the infrastructure investment," Hopper said. "To the extent that we can plug analytics into the BPM experience, the end users are going to be even more happy with their end result. They'll walk away with better decisions."
Spotfire uses complex event processing (CEP) to provide users with real-time information from the Tibco BPM platform. Users can access the analytics either from their PC desktop or via a Web browser with Ajax-based interactivity, he said.
"By virtue of our relationship with Tibco, we're kind of like a kid in a candy store now in terms of our access to intelligence software infrastructures that are by nature real-time and by nature event-driven, and also deliver business process management technology as an area of expertise," said Hopper.
Tibco's Spotfire group has also released Tibco Spotfire Network Analytics. It offers views of the network of relationships between data points. It is said to help in any type of relationship analysis, from identifying email or cell phone traffic patterns to performing social network analysis.
