This week, Oracle is providing more details on the latest version of the Coherence grid technology it acquired along with Tangosol, which provides XTP capabilities that integrate with the BPM platform.

Oracle is now offering Coherence 3.4 as either a standalone or as part of the WebLogic server technology, acquired earlier this year with BEA Systems, Cameron Purdy, vice president, Oracle Coherence Development explained. Coherence can also integrate with the Oracle SOA Suite for dashboard applications such as Business Activity Management (BAM).

Gartner is fairly prominent among analyst firms discussing the area of XTP. The notion arose after Gartner talked to customers using hundreds of commodity servers in blade systems for processing 100,000 transactions per second over long, sustained periods of time.

"This is what Gartner labeled extreme transaction processing," Purdy said. "These are the types of applications that our customers can build with Coherence."

Coherence can manage all the information in high-speed transactions across potentially hundreds of servers, sharing the load of managing that information, Purdy said. Dealing with commodity servers, it is important to provide seamless fail over if a server dies in mid-transaction, Purdy noted.

"If a server goes down in the middle of an operation, it still successfully completes that transaction because it fails over that in-flight transaction and completes it on another server," he explained. "You can't lose that information. If a server goes down, the system has to survive that without interruption."
