WS-Reliability middleware released as open source

Three proponents of the WS-Reliability standard late last week released messaging software based on the specification as open source.

Fujitsu Limited, Hitachi, Ltd., and NEC Corp.'s new middleware, called Reliable Messaging for Grid Services (RM4GS), ensures reliability in the exchange of Web services messages, the vendors said in a statement.

WS-Reliability, ratified this month as an OASIS standard, removes the necessity that each application on a web services network guarantee the reliability of the exchange. The new RM4GS software, for example, provides a reliable messaging function that ensures messages are not lost or duplicated in transmission.

Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC last year were among a group of vendors that penned a draft of WS-Reliability. They said releasing RM4GS as open source will increase adoption of products that will also make use of the reliable messaging function.

The three vendors are also members of the Business Grid Computing Project, which develops middleware for use in grid computing. RM4GS was developed as part of a project promoted by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

OASIS ratification of WS-Reliability 1.1 was finalized Nov. 15. It supports guaranteed delivery, which ensures the message is delivered at least once, duplication elimination, which certifies that the message is delivered at most once, and message delivery ordering, which guarantees messages in a sequence are delivered in the order sent, OASIS said in a statement.

"Financial transactions are just one example of the kind of applications that need WS-Reliability to meet quality-of-service standards. A message requesting a money withdrawal, for instance, must be received by an application once and only once," said Tom Rutt, chair of the OASIS Web Services Reliable Messaging (WSRM) Technical Committee in a statement. "With the WS-Reliability OASIS Standard, information can be shared between software programs over the Internet as reliably as within a single application on a laptop."
