Delivering some long-awaited guidance on using attachments in the context of Web services, The Web Services-Interoperability Organization (WS-I) today released three profiles as Final Material.

The designation signals the start of work on testing tools and sample applications for the profiles that developers may use to test the conformance of their services against Web services specifications.

"Not having guidance [on attachments] has been an impediment to broad adoption," said Chris Ferris, chairman of the WS-I Basic Profile working group.

The three profiles -- a re-architecting of the Basic Profile 1.0, Attachments Profile 1.0 and Simple SOAP Binding Profile 1.1 -- provide vendors and, to a lesser extent developers, with a guide for creating interoperable Web services.

Attachments Profile 1.0 and Simple SOAP Binding Profile 1.1 are to be used in conjunction with the Basic Profile 1.1 to test conformance, dependent upon whether the SOAP messages used in a Web services carry attachments, Ferris said.

Simple SOAP Binding Profile 1.1, meanwhile, defines the XML structure for transmitting messages.

Ferris explained that it became apparent during the process that it would be necessary to redo the Basic Profile itself to include any feedback and comments from WS-I members and developers.

"This separation is made to facilitate composability of Basic Profile 1.1 with any profile that specifies envelope serialization, including the Simple SOAP Binding Profile 1.0 and the Attachments Profile 1.0," WS-I said in a statement. "A combined claim of conformance to both the Basic Profile 1.1 and the Simple SOAP Binding Profile 1.0 is roughly equivalent to a claim of conformance to the Basic Profile 1.0 plus published errata."

WS-I also announced today that it has chartered a new working group dedicated to resolving interoperability issues around XML schema in the context of Web services.

The XML Schema Work Plan Working Group will begin work in September and expects to have a profile in place within six months, Ferris said.
