Comdex hosts Web services 'Iron Chef' challenge

Staff report

Grand Central Communications Inc., San Francisco, was the winner of the "Iron Chef of Web Services Challenge" at last week's Comdex trade show in Las Vegas.

Grand Central said it competed against Computer Associates, Microsoft, Universal Data Interface and Collaxa to develop Web services applications in real time. The winning effort was a mock Web service for a novelist to track his book rankings on various e-commerce sites and also follow his stock portfolio. The service was created using Grand Central's Business Services Network, which Grand Central said monitors service activity, ensures correct data is being delivered to correct services, tracks events of concern and sends alerts by e-mail, fax or another Web service.

The Web Services Challenge was designed to give programmers an opportunity to showcase both their technology and their development skills by creating Web services-based applications using published Web services and commercially available software. In the competition, five services were randomly selected from a list of more than 40, and the teams were required to incorporate at least three of the services.
