OASIS approves standard for Web services portlets

Staff report

The OASIS standards group has approved a standard that defines how Web services plug into portals.

In its announcement today, the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards said Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) version 1.0 has earned the consortium's highest level of ratification. According to OASIS, WSRP standardizes the consumption of Web services in portal front ends, as well as the way in which content providers write Web services for portals.

"WSRP builds on foundational work from the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C)," OASIS CEO Patrick Gannon said in a statement. "WSRP uses WSDL to describe interfaces, and requires SOAP bindings for all conformant services."

WSRP was the creation of 25 vendors, including IBM, BEA Systems, Microsoft and Oracle. OASIS said WSRP eliminates the need for content aggregators to choose between locally hosting a content source or writing code specific to each remote content source.

The new standard also allows remote portlet Web services to be implemented in a variety of ways, including Microsoft's .NET platform and Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
