The Open Group recently released the ArchiMate 2.0 modeling language for enterprise architecture, adding important hooks to the broader TOGAF tool set. Developed by the ArchiMate Forum of The Open Group, the latest ArchiMate version has been upgraded to enable modeling through the TOGAF Architecture Development Method (ADM). This aims to help enterprise architects improve the way business and IT stakeholders work together.
ArchiMate includes an enterprise architecture modeling language to support the description, analysis and visualization of architecture for the business domain. Developed in the Netherlands by a combination of academia, government and businesses, ArchiMate is now a technical standard overseen by the Open Group.
The updated modeling language is said to allow for clearer enterprise-wide understanding, putting enterprise architects, business executives, systems analysts, software engineers, business process consultants and infrastructure engineers on “the same page.” That means ArchiMate 2.0 can enable the creation of fully integrated models of an organization’s enterprise architecture, as well as all programs and projects necessary for implementation, its proponents contend.
''This new standard will increase interoperability and help enterprise architects establish a common language across the enterprise, raising the value and awareness of the discipline,'' Open Group CEO Allen Brown said in a statement.

pain points does ArchiMate address? It meets a general need to
become more practical, specific and result oriented, according to Lars Lundgren, manager, Biner,
who responded to SearchSOA.com’s question via e-mail message. ''Add-on features in ArchiMate 2.0
[address] motivation and project planning. This strengthens the purpose of doing enterprise
architecture in a business change initiative [for] identifying, prioritizing and planning of
implementation projects,” writes Lundgren. All these elements counter the too-common drive to do
modeling for ''the sake of producing architecture artifacts.''
In contrast to the ArchiMate 1.0 standard that has a focus on documenting the actual enterprise architecture, the ArchiMate 2.0 standard supports modeling throughout the TOGAF architecture development cycle (ADM), according to Harmen van den Berg, owner, Bizz Design.
''ArchiMate 2.0 offers a modeling language to create fully integrated models of the organization’s enterprise architecture, the motivation for the enterprise architecture, and the programs, projects and migration paths to implement this enterprise architecture,'' he writes, also via e-mail.
This means the linked ArchiMate and TOGAF tools support forward- and backward-traceability.
