Well, I came home from the Application Architecture, Development and Integration Summit in LA with an IR presentation...

pointer and an LED-lit yo-yo, but those were not the big takeaways from the recent Gartner event. My big take away from the AADI is that SOA is alive and well. The Gartner Summit experience seemed to confirm some trends we have been seeing on this site.
According to Gartner, 60% of mobile apps by 2015 will be Web apps.
SOA is like electricity - it's just there. It is an enabler. It is one of the ways that highly successful teams do things. Just as importantly, SOA allows you to evolve your systems along the lines that lead to the future. SOA is a big part of cloud computing.
As people look at the fact that there are some application elements they will place in private clouds and traditional data centers, and some other elements they will actually begin to place in public clouds, the crucial role of services as lingua franca becomes ever more apparent. We saw that cloud was a way to do SOA as long ago as last November when we presented expert David Linthicum in a podcast deep dive. SOA greases the skids for cloud.
The Gartner event drove this home: when we talk about cloud we are often talking about mobile applications. And, according to Gartner, 60% of mobile apps by 2015 will be Web apps. The move to Web apps and mobile is driving the move to SOA, and it is a REST-centric SOA at that.
The Gartner sessions on REST last week were packed. We've seen this emerging over the years, but now it may have reached a tipping point, as we learned in a RESTful discussion last month with expert Tom Nolle.
There is much more. We look forward to additional future coverage that will show how SOA is driving application modernization and BPM initiatives. So, let's hear it one more time: "SOA is alive. SOA is a big part of cloud. Cloud is about mobile. And mobile will make SOA bigger yet." Sail on, great ship of SOA!
