SOA data integration and MDM as a platform with Informatica9

Product will combine tools for data quality, application lifecycle management, data integration and master data management (MDM) into a single platform.

Informatica is enhancing its platform to deal with SOA features.

Informatica recently said it would release Informatica9, which will provide an enhanced data integration platform, in Q4. It combines products in data integration, data quality, B2B data exchange, application information lifecycle management, complex event processing and cloud computing data integration.

"You can use a single environment to do physical and virtual data integration and standardize any sort of data," said Ash Parikh, product marketing manager at Informatica. "Informatica9 lets you create a data abstraction layer that can serve up data as a service to any application as it is needed."

Inside the enterprise itself, data can live across numerous applications and data stores. To address this, Informatica included several SOA-related features in this release. These include information catalog services, logical data objects, multi-model data provisioning and policy-based data services governance. Data is discovered automatically then grouped into objects which can be delivered in a variety of formats, such as Web services and SQL.

The company has pulled together all of its relevant data management offerings into a single platform. Though the release is a big step for Informatica, some industry experts see it merely as part of a well developed trend.

"They haven't cured cancer yet," said Rob Karel, principal analyst at Forrester Research. "They're doing what IBM has been doing for years with their information server."

This Informatica release has more real-time functionality and places more focus on business users, Karel said.

"It is part of a trend and I think the degree of integration that they have achieved is pretty substantial in comparison to the rest of the industry," said Carl Olofson, research VP at IDC, "although, they're all pretty much on the same track."
