Service Orientation for Architects

Welcome to SearchWebServices.com's SOA School: Service-Orientation for Architects. This free, multimedia school will tackle service-oriented architecture from a design perspective, with the lessons provided by leading lights in the SOA movement. Each lesson will focus on a critical facet of SOA and attendees will learn about the architectural concerns therein. Those who go through the entire school will understand the deeper architectural principles in SOA and be given actionable tips on how to move from concept to reality.

NEW IN THIS GUIDE
Understanding the SOA lifecycle (SOA Modeling)
Will SOA flexibility compromise your security? (SOA Security)
Services messaging and mediation (Main Lesson)

SOA MODELING

Service-oriented architecture requires a brand new approach to modeling and design. In this lesson, the new landscape architects must negotiate as they plan out SOA projects will be examined.

SOA SECURITY

This lesson focuses on how to approach SOA security from an architectural perspective. A Webcast with Burton Group's Anne Thomas Manes lays out a holistic approach to SOA security. It covers threats, requirements, point-to-point security, WS-* and what constitutes a layered defense system. Steve Craggs of Lustratus Research provides a written tip discussing the flexibility-security tradeoff. He also discusses the top five SOA traps in a podcast.

MESSAGING

In this lesson, a Webcast with WSO2's Paul Fremantle, who is also co-chair of the OASIS WS-RX Technical Committee, explains fundamentals used in architecting a loosely coupled messaging infrastructure. SOAP, REST and JMS are among the messaging structures covered in the presentation. Particular emphasis is placed on making sure your messaging conforms to a service-oriented paradigm. Fremantle also provides a written tip on services mediation on creating a more flexible messaging infrastructure.

SOA DATA INTEGRATION

This lesson features a Webcast with noted SOA consultant David S. Linthicum on how to build a data services layer into your SOA. Data abstraction, metadata mapping, XQuery and Service Data Objects are a few of the topics he covers in the presentation. He warns that SOA performance issues are nearly automatic for architects who haven't properly accounted for data integration. XML guru Ed Tittel also provides a written tip on the instant usability of the XQuery 1.0 specification.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF GOVERNANCE

This lesson features a Webcast with Lawrence Wilkes from Everware-CBDI, in which he breaks down the different areas that need governing inside an SOA and how to design governance inside your SOA. Topics such as service provisioning, portfolio management, reference architecture, policy compliance, service lifecycle governance, service metadata and asset management are discussed. The lesson also includes a tip on the emerging WS-Policy standard from Citigroup senior architect Mark Temple-Raston.
