SearchSOA.com spoke with Dan Diephouse of Mulesoft about ESBs, RESTful services, and SOA at the Java Symposium 2009 in Las Vegas.

In this video Q&A, Diephouse says that while the ESB can perform data integration, transformations and message routing in a transaction-secure environment, RESTful services can better enable architects and developers to build scalable and evolveable distributed services.

Diephouse also discusses how SOA fits between business management and software developers. "What technology you use needs to filter all the way up, just like the business goals you have should flow all the way down to the developers underneath," said Diephouse.

"CIOs can't just sign a check and say 'hear's a couple million dollars, we're going to do this big SOA initiative and it's going to magically make everything better.' You have to make intelligent decisions."

Other topics covered include HTTP and recent criticisms of SOA. TheServerSide Java Symposium Europe takes place October 27-28, 2009, in Prague, CZ.
