Microsoft's emerging Oslo SOA modeling initiative provides a new take on issues of SOA and software design. For its part, Microsoft is broadening its approach to include more UML-related modeling tools. In a surprise move, Microsoft joined the Object Management Group to advance modeling standards and concepts. There are many moving parts to Oslo, including the new MGrammar (Mg) language. Read all about it.

How you can learn M Grammar for Oslo modeling
Today, when developers want to create a new way to describe a domain, such as all of the attributes of a contact, they use XML, which forces the developer to tolerate a lot of angle brackets. The new MGrammar (Mg) from Microsoft promises an alternative for developers. The M grammar component of Microsoft's emerging Oslo modeling environment acts like a parser but is also declarative.

Microsoft Oslo at PDC: Dial 'M' for modeling language
Microsoft's emerging Oslo SOA modeling initiative has just gained a bit more clarity. Part of the package now is M, a modeling language supporting the Oslo community technology preview included in .NET Framework 4.0, released at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (PDC). Oslo also includes a repository.

Microsoft modeling strategy: Work in progress
After several years pursuing a modeling tool strategy focused on Domain Specific Languages (DSLs), Microsoft is broadening its approach to include more UML-related modeling tools. How these tools will work under the umbrella of the company's emerging Oslo meta modeling strategy appears to still be a work in progress.

Microsoft previews new Dublin composite app platform for SOA
Microsoft began previewing modules of a platform for composite application development, which includes support for service-oriented architecture, Web 2.0 and RESTful projects. The company is offering new versions of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) as part of the previously announced .NET Framework 4.0 release.

Microsoft joins OMG, readies Oslo modeling effort to address services proliferation
As it gets ready to release a preview of its Oslo modeling framework, Microsoft joins the Object Management Group to advance modeling standards and concepts. In advance of the preview release of its Oslo modeling framework, Microsoft announced that it is joining Object Management Group (OMG) to help advance modeling, which is the "core focus of Microsoft's Dynamic IT strategy."

UML and SOA the Microsoft way
Microsoft's Oslo project for model-driven service-oriented architecture (SOA) will support, but will not be based on the unified modeling language (UML), according to Burley Kawasaki, director of Microsoft's connected systems division.
