About the Chapter
Over the past five years, with the birth of XML-based simple object access protocol (SOAP) and WSDL, further supplemented by the Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) specification, the first generation of Web services was established. Since then, industry-wide support has furthered the Web services platform and service-oriented architecture. This chapter, excerpted from Service-Oriented Architecture: A Field Guide to Integrating XML and Web Services, focuses on the standards that make up the Web services platform and how Web services relates to service-oriented architecture.
