Ben Wright is an independent attorney practicing computer security and e-commercial law in Dallas, Texas.
Wright has delivered over 600 presentations on the law of e-commerce, privacy, records management, and computer security and has been quoted in publications around the globe, from the Wall Street Journal to the Sydney Morning Herald. He is the author of several IT law books, including Business Law & Computer Security, published by The SANS Institute in 2003.

How did you get started in security? Since 1988 I have been writing and advising clients about the legality of electronic business transactions. From the beginning, a key issue was how to prove that an electronic record of a transaction is authentic and reliable.
What non-IT related job experience have you had?
I have been a practicing business lawyer since 1984.
What work-related accomplishment are you most proud of?
I have anticipated several technology-related trends in commercial law.
Who has influenced you most as a security professional?
Bob Bales, co-founder of the National Computer Security Association (now TruSecure Corporation) and security vendor PestPatrol. Bob first introduced me to the profession as such.
What is your favorite piece of hardware or software?
My Google toolbar dazzles me daily.
What are your hobbies?
Backpacking in the mountains and scrutinizing world affairs before I retire every night.
What one book would you like to be stranded with on a desert island and why?
A compilation of work by the 18th century bard William Blake. Blake bent my ear when I studied him in college, and my ear has not been the same since.
What do you like the best about your job?
I mix with a wide variety of people and organizations from around the world.
What do you like least?
My opinion is not always right!
What words of wisdom do you give to other security professionals?
In the words of A.A. Milne: "One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries."
