I'm finding it difficult to determine the differences between Web 2.0 vendors. It seems they all use the same buzzwords in their marketing: Ajax, Web 2.0, RIA, mashups. Are there any specific product categories in this space that might help me sort out who does what?

Specific product categories are really just more vendor buzz, or even worse, a combination of vendor and analyst buzz. As a result, looking to product categories doesn't really help clarify matters much. Instead, it's best to look at what the products actually do. Start with what the vendors say they do, but then test the ones you like to make sure they actually deliver on the promises.
