XML encryption is very flexible. You can use it to encrypt a complete XML document, an XML element which contains children or a single element within the document. For example if your document contained the element "credit card", which in turn contained children elements for the name of the holder and the credit card number, you could encrypt the credit card element, thereby encrypting the name and number or you could just encrypt the number. XML encryption also supports super-encryption, whereby you can encrypt something that is already encrypted. You can even encrypt the key used to encrypt the data.
