Who are the current market leaders in the SOM software space and how do you see them stacking up?

Services-oriented management is still a new an emerging space, and it's very difficult to see a clear market leader. There are a number of companies who appear to stand out more than others, although a general critisism is that too many vendors only provide products with management support for SOAP-based services only, and therefore these products will be unable to provide services-oriented management to the entire enterprise infrastrucure. Many analyst firms provide a breakdown of the overall market, and analyst firms such as ZapThink, The Burton Group, Forrester, Gartner, and others are all preparing new reports in this area.
While analyst firms can provide quality independent advice, I suggest that you also do your own hands-on evaluation of products against your own requirements. Also, beyond the basic functional requirements, it is also worthwhile paying special attention to the products abilities in the following areas:
-Ability to apply Service Oriented Management to non-SOAP services
-Support for the actual technologies used in your infrastructure
(J2EE, .NET, Messaging, CORBA, and so on)
-Support for appropriate security products and standards
-Undesirable levels of invasiveness including instrumentation of existing code and unnecessary proxy deployments
-Forced to use proprietary SOAP extensions
