Is it necessary for Web developers to know XML?

>
Given that XML pops up everywhere from configuration files to query languages these days, I would suggest that any Web developer worthy of the title would at least have a passing knowledge of XML. Having said that, you don't need to know much more than the basics to get by. There are numerous online tutorials that cover the basics in enough detail for the average web developer to be able to read and create basic XML.
