Have you looked at the water language,which supports both a functional and
object-oriented programming style?
Wiley just published a 400+ page book
on it (that I wrote). The creators of the language (Fry and Plusch)
have an MIT background and have worked on Lisp, Dylan and ML systems.

Yes, I have looked at water. There are numerous languages that take this
approach. The first I remember was
back in the SGML days that had to do with IETMs (Interactive Electronic Technical
Manuals). I personally do not like
the approach, but then again I'm spoiled (a Python programmer). :-)
