Any advice on Web services reading material?

QUESTION POSED ON: 13 February 2002
I founded and ran an object technology services company from 87-95 and have been doing some management consulting since. I am now ready to jump in again; someone mentioned that Web services may be a good set of technologies to focus on. I am trying to sort out the wood from the trees and wondered if you had any advice on reading material. I would rather be deep than broad so am looking for some core technologies to offer training and consulting services around. Any help would be most welcome.

Web services are a great area for a consultant to focus on, many are in demand. However, I would also focus on the broader topics including application integration of which Web services is a part. I would recommend:

* Building Web Services with Java: Making Sense of XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI by Steve Graham, et al.

* Programming Web Services With SOAP by James Snell, Doug Tidwell, Pavel Kulchenko

Don't forget about my B2B and EAI books; focus on application service level application integration chapters.
