TP monitors vs. application servers

What is the difference between TP monitors and Application Servers? Can they be used in combination?
A Transaction Process Monitor (or TPM) monitors the transaction status, and can sometimes perform rollback or compensating transaction functions. An application server hosts the applications in a Java environment.
