Is there a way of using CGI and XML to associate a stylesheet with a XML document? For instance the CGI would ask for the name of the XML document and then associate it with a given stylesheet and thus the resulting HTML page would be displayed.

Yes. Stylesheets can be associated with XML documents using a processing instruction e.g.

         <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="mystyle.xsl"?>
         <foo>
         </foo>

The CGI script could pre-pend the stylesheet PI to the retrieved XML document on-the-fly.
