Can XML support the functions of a request-for-quote?

I am wondering if you may be able to assist with a specific question I have on XML. I am researching whether XML is compatible or can support the functions of a Request for Quote, a Payment or Remittance Advice and an Order Status Check in reference to a Purchaser submitting a Purchase Order. If you are able to assist or direct me in the correct path I greatly appreciate your time.

XML is certainly suitable for representing this sort of business document. Note that XML itself does not provide any eCommerce facilities - rather it serves as a lingua franca on which eCommerce interchanges can be expressed in an open systems fashion.

I would suggest taking a look at the eCommerce related XML activities hosted by Oasis - www.oasis-open.org and in particular ebXML.
