A passive SOM solution only watches services being requested and delivered, and provides analysis of these activities. A passive SOM solution may additionally provide management of Service Level Agreements, and levels of alarms and alerts.
An active SOM solution provides components that participate in the processing and delivery or service requests while they are in-flight, typically providing authorization or routing.
